Please use this information to pray for our expectant moms and their babies. Using this table we can pray specifically about each stage of development.
1st month:
The fertilized eggs cell quickly divides into 2 cells, the 2 into 4, the 4 into 8, and so on. While multiplying, it moves down the uterine tube, about a 3-day journey, and enters the cavity of the uterus. In the first month of life the-infant-to-be progresses from egg to embryo. It's one quarter of an inch long.
2nd month:
The embryo begins to get a brain, a neck, some bones and connective tissue; finger and toes, skin and internal gender organs.
3rd month
The embryo is now a reasonable shape of o human being. The gender of the infant-to-be emerges. Tooth buds begin to sprout inside the dental arch. Ears are formed. Finger nails and toe nails appear. Liver, stomach, and kidneys begin to work, mouth and jaws, nose, throat and vocal cords start developing.
4th month:
The fetal heart beat gets much stronger. The forebrain begins to develop rapidly. Gender organs develop. Eyebrows, eyelashes, fingerprints are usually formed.
5th month:
Real hair appears on the head. Finger nails and toe nails grow out. Sweat glands and sebaceous glands appear on the wine-colored skin. All internal organs are present, but not in the shape or position they will later assume.
6th month:
The fetus begins to open its eyes. The internal organs settle more and more into their proper places.
7th month:
The infant-to-be fills out and develops in all directions.
8 th and 9th months:
The infant gains much weight and strength. Its skin color improves. It moves around in the uterus. About 95% of the time, however, it grows head down.
Height of the embryo:
At the age of 1 month, the embryo is ¼ inch long
At 2 months, 1 inch long
At 3 months, 3 inches long
At 6 months, over 12 inches long
At birth, from 18 inches to 24 inches long
Weight of the embryo:
From 1-3 months, weighs less than an ounce
At 4 months, around 6 ounces
At 5 months, about 1 pound
At 6 months, about 2 pounds
At 9 months, about 7.5 pounds
